Key Performance  Indicators for safety improvement


The ILO estimates that some 2.3 million women and men around the world succumb to work-related accidents or diseases every year; this corresponds to over 6000 deaths every single day. Worldwide, there are around 340 million occupational accidents and 160 million victims of work-related illnesses annually. The ILO updates these estimates at intervals, and the updates indicate an increase of accidents and ill health.
48000 workers die in the country due to occupational accidents of which 24.2 % contributes construction industries. These Incidents are 20 times higher than Britain.38 fatal incidents in construction industry every day and 137 fatal accidents in all sectors.
    Zero incidents’ goals
1.      Clear long term vision and goal towards safety
Organization must have long term vision towards safety not only desire but must have written plan to improve safety culture.
2.     Strong Visible Leadership
Organization Leader must have willingness and self-discipline to work towards build up safety culture in the organization. Leader must demonstrate through his activities how he can empower others throughout the organization to establish safety culture. Leader should not behave with double standard.
3.      Safety procedure and Knowledge

Organization must have their own safety procedures aligned with OSHA/HSEF standards. All employees must be trained for safety procedures such a way that these procedures must get into their blood.

4.      Good and strict Governance

Organization must have system in place for good governance to observe the effectiveness of management of safety procedures. They should monitor the lagging and leading indicators for measurement of performance.

5.      Should not set example of double standard.

Management should not set example for double standard as they should not follow as per convenience instead they should give priority to safety than the business so as to avoid forthcoming consequences. Safety comes first.

6.     There is visible evidence of a financial investment in health and safety

Management should not market the safety culture by displaying the safety posters, slogans at site but management should willing to invest in required resources to maintain safety culture. There should be clear visibility of financial investment in safety resources
.
7.     Opportunities for improvement are identified and resolved before a problem occurs
Management should  deploy there safety officer to identify safety issues proactively to get it turns in to critical problems Timely actions of control measures will help to reduce the risk factors. 
8.            Well Established communication system

Good and fair communication will help to awareness of good safety knowledge to empower the people working in the     organization. Safety process should have clearly defined roles and responsibilities. In order for the people throughout your organization to successfully accomplish their role in the process, they will need resources and authority to make decisions

9.     Safety is the first item on the agenda of every meeting.

Safety topics should be discussed first in every meeting to give clear message of the safety is priority.

10.Active participation in  health and safety from everyone in the organization

Safety is everyone’s job, and everyone needs to do their job well. From top management level to bottom shop floor worker level, it takes a team effort to win at safety. Everyone needs to play a substantial role in the safety process. Safety success rate is depend upon the active participation of all employees.

11.      Management should motivate all employees to achieve safety success.

Management should give rewards to motivate the employees and highly participation will help to increase the participation from all as well as .this will produce tangible positive results. This will also help the organization’s commitments towards safety initiative is effective.Because of motivation the job satisfaction rate will get improved and they will feel comfort to report issues for timely action and lead to increase safety performance.

12. Safety is condition of employment

Management should take disciplinary actions. If organization values safety above all else and when there are actions and there are the consequences, any employee who doesn’t share this value should face the disciplinary actions.

13.    .There should be well established emergency response plan

Organization should prepare the emergency response plan and should train their employees from time to time. Management should check effectiveness of the emergency response plan by carrying out periodical mock drill.

14.     Organization should carry out audits for statutory legal compliance

Organization should develop system to carry out internal/external audit so as to comply statutory legal compliance in time and avoid the consequences.


15. Organization should have good health program for their all employees.

The good health program will feel security to all employees and will get motivated and satisfaction. They will contribute to achieve high safety success rate.


16. Organization should develop standard for reporting all injuries and incidents. Nothing should be hidden where         no one will think to look!
This is a major one. Nothing ought to be hidden where no one will think to look. In incredible safety cultures, openness and honesty is the best way to direct business. This is tied in with living as a general rule and going up against the difficulties that exist in your working environment
